Blue Box ReviewThe craft of making theatre happen

About Blue Box Review

Blue Box Review is an independent English-language magazine covering how theatre productions are made, managed and housed.

What this publication is

Blue Box Review is an independent English-language magazine about the craft of theatre production. It explains how shows are made, how the business behind the stage works, and how theatres and companies operate. It is written for theatre-goers, students, and anyone curious about the work that happens before the curtain rises.

Blue Box Review is an independent publication with no organizational tie to any earlier holder of this web address. It is not an agency and sells nothing. Its purpose is explanatory: to describe how theatre work is done.

The three desks

The magazine runs three desks.

Productions. This desk covers how shows are made, rehearsed, toured, and kept alive. Entries look at staging choices, rehearsal processes, touring logistics, and the practical work that sustains a production over time.

The management craft. This desk covers general management, talent representation, budgets, and rights. Entries explain how productions are financed and administered, how agents and managers work with performers, and how licensing and rights shape what can be staged.

Venues and companies. This desk covers theatre buildings and the companies that fill them. Entries look at how venues are run, how companies organize themselves, and how buildings and organizations shape the work on stage.

Who it is written for

The readership includes theatre-goers who want to understand what they are watching, students studying theatre or arts management, and people curious about the business behind the stage. No specialized knowledge is assumed. Technical terms are explained when they appear.

How entries are produced

Each entry is built from named sources wherever possible. Published interviews, official programmes, company statements, and public records are credited by name so readers can check them.

Entries distinguish between observation and inference. Facts drawn from named sources are presented as reported facts. Where the magazine draws a conclusion that goes beyond those sources, the text marks it as an assessment or interpretation. Readers can therefore see which parts of an entry are documented and which parts are reasoned judgement.

Each entry is accompanied by illustrative scenes composed for that entry. These images support the subject of the text. They are not photographs of specific events and are not presented as documentary evidence.

Editorial stance

Blue Box Review uses affirmative, factual wording. It describes what is known and states plainly what is uncertain. It has no commercial relationships to disclose and offers no products for sale.
