Editorial Policy

Sourcing

Blue Box Review is written from named, publicly available sources: published interviews, company and venue records, press releases, trade publications and public filings. Where a source is not public, we say so. We do not rely on unnamed accounts for factual claims.

Naming

We use neutral labels for every company, venue and organization we cover. We name entities as they name themselves in current public records. We never imply that one organization is the successor to, or continuation of, an earlier entity with a similar name, address or purpose. Where an earlier entity existed and a connection is unclear, we state that the connection is unclear rather than assuming one.

Uncertainty

Gaps in the record are stated as gaps. If dates conflict, if a budget figure is unverified, if a company's current status is unknown, we write that the information is unverified or unknown. We do not fill gaps with inference dressed as fact. Speculation, when we use it, is labeled as speculation.

Images

Every entry is accompanied by an illustrative scene composed for that entry. These images exist to accompany the text, not to document it. Captions identify each image as an illustrative scene composed for the entry. We do not present any image as documentary evidence of a production, person, venue or event, and no image should be read as such.

Corrections

Corrections are evidence-based. When we publish an error, we state what was wrong, what the evidence shows, and we quote the passage as it originally appeared so readers can see what changed. Corrections appear on the entry in question. We do not silently rewrite published text where a correction is warranted.

Independence

Blue Box Review is an independent publication. It has no organizational tie to earlier holders of this address, no parent company, no agency relationships and no products for sale. Coverage decisions rest with the editorial team alone. We accept no payment for coverage, placement or tone. If a reported item concerns an organization with which we have any dealings, we disclose that in the entry.

Scope

We cover three subjects: how productions are made, toured and kept alive; the management craft behind them, including general management, representation, budgets and rights; and venues and the companies that fill them. Material outside this scope is not published, however newsworthy it may be elsewhere.

Review

This policy is reviewed regularly and applies to every entry we publish. Questions about how a specific entry was researched are answered by reference to the sources named in that entry.
